On symmetric-key sizes

Bruce Schneier has a post to which I couldn’t resist linking. He discusses why a 49,000-bit key is ridiculous, the dangers of using “home-brewed” cryptography, and the thermodynamic limits of brute-force search (much better than I did in class).
